The peptide lacks cysteine, methionine, and tryptophan, so disulfide scrambling and sulfur oxidation are not major degradation routes. Instead, aspartate residues can undergo isomerization or cyclization to succinimide intermediates, generating isoaspartate variants. Hydrolysis of peptide bonds also occurs slowly in solution. These changes may reduce biological activity even when the main peak remains detectable. Stability studies therefore track both potency and the appearance of related substances.
Lyophilized thymosin alpha 1 is typically stored refrigerated at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and kept away from light. Reconstituted solutions are less stable and are usually used promptly after preparation. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are avoided because they can promote aggregation and loss of activity. The peptide adsorbs to some plastic and glass surfaces, so a carrier protein is often added to dilute working solutions. Manufacturer instructions and published protocols both govern handling.

Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography is the standard technique for assessing purity and concentration, because the peptide's hydrophobicity allows clean separation from related impurities. Mass spectrometry confirms molecular identity and detects sequence errors or truncations. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping supply additional structural confirmation when required. Chromatographic purity values reported on certificates of analysis describe the proportion of the main peak and do not by themselves establish biological activity.
Like most short peptides, thymosin alpha-1 is susceptible to hydrolysis under strongly acidic or basic conditions and to oxidation when exposed to air over long periods. The acetylated amino terminus blocks one common degradation route, which contributes to the molecule's relative robustness in solution. Lyophilized material generally retains potency for extended periods when kept cold and dry. Once reconstituted, aqueous solutions are less stable and are typically used within a defined window rather than held indefinitely at ambient temperature.
Routine handling calls for storage of the lyophilized powder at refrigerated temperatures, away from light, in a sealed container. Working solutions are often prepared in sterile water or buffer and kept cold between uses. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are generally avoided because they can promote aggregation and loss of material. Laboratories usually record lot number, reconstitution date, and storage conditions so that any change in behavior can be traced to a specific preparation.
The lyophilized peptide is generally stable for extended periods when kept cold and dry. Once dissolved, aqueous solutions are less stable; hydrolysis, oxidation, and aggregation can degrade the material. Storage at -20 °C or lower slows these processes. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are best avoided because they can promote aggregation. The exact shelf life depends on formulation, pH, and concentration, so stability studies are typically performed for each specific product.
Quality control for thymosin alpha-1 focuses on identity, purity, and potency. Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry and amino acid analysis, while purity is assessed by chromatography with limits on related substances and residual solvents. Potency assays may use cell-based immune readouts, but these are not standardized across laboratories. Regulatory status differs by jurisdiction; no product is approved in the United States for clinical use, whereas some other countries register injectable forms for specific indications.
Quantifying thymosin alpha-1 in a sample usually relies on reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The peptide lacks strong chromophores, so detection often occurs at 214 nm, where the peptide backbone absorbs. Mass spectrometry provides confirmatory identification and can detect sequence variants or truncations. Immunoassays have been used in biological matrices, but they may cross-react with related fragments. For purity assessment, chromatographic peak area gives the main component percentage, while mass accuracy verifies molecular identity.
Practical handling focuses on limiting adsorption and contamination. The peptide dissolves readily in water, and dilute solutions tend to adhere to plastic and glass surfaces, so an inert carrier protein or a defined buffer can reduce losses in laboratory work. Workers also record the counter-ion form, since an acetate or trifluoroacetate salt changes the mass balance of the weighed powder. Documentation of lot number, purity value, and storage history supports reproducibility when results from different laboratories are compared.
Lyophilized material is generally held at reduced temperature to slow degradation, and storage at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower is common practice for long-term retention. Short-term working portions are often kept between two and eight degrees Celsius. Once dissolved, the peptide is less stable than the dry powder, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are associated with loss of material and with aggregate formation. Vials are usually allowed to reach room temperature before opening so that condensation does not introduce moisture, and solutions are protected from light where practical.
Several factors accelerate degradation: alkaline pH, elevated temperature, exposure to oxidants, and the presence of residual moisture. Deamidation of asparagine residues and oxidation of methionine are the most commonly reported degradation routes. Because the peptide lacks disulfide bonds, it does not undergo the thiol-related aggregation seen in some other biologics, but physical aggregation can still occur at high concentration. Stability data are product-specific, and extrapolating shelf life between formulations is not reliable.
Lyophilized thymosin alpha-1 is generally stored at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius, protected from moisture and light. Short-term handling at ambient temperature is possible for dry powder, but reconstituted solutions degrade faster and are usually kept at two to eight degrees Celsius with a defined expiry of days rather than weeks. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided because they promote aggregation and loss of potency. Exact limits depend on the formulation and should follow the supplier's documentation.
=== 1988 to 2011: Reduced again but back on operations === At the end of the Cold War, the TA had a strength of 72,823, including 3,297 in the Home Service Force (HSF). in the 1991 Gulf War 205 Scottish General Hospital was mobilised as a unit based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and a number of TA staff officers and others volunteered and served during the conflict, either in supporting roles in Germany or within 1 (UK) Armoured Division in the Middle East. In December 1991, as part of the reductions in Options for Change, it was announced that the TA's establishment was to be reduced to 63,000, while the HSF element was to be disbanded. In July 1994, this was further reduced to 59,000. The Reserve Forces Act of May 1996 was a landmark reform, making it much easier to call out any element of the Reserves at the behest of the Secretary of State for a range of purposes including 'protection of life or property' well short of the criteria for Queen's Order (e.g. 'great emergency', 'imminent national danger'). It also provides protection in employment law for members' civilian jobs should they be mobilised. This has led to the Army Reserve increasingly providing routine support for the Regular Army overseas including the delivery of composite units to release regular units from standing liabilities; including Bosnia, Kosovo, Cyprus and the Falkland Islands. Some 2,800 TA personnel volunteered for and deployed on Operation Resolute from 1995 to 1998, the UK's contribution to the NATO mission to enforce peace in the Former Yugoslavia.
Microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) or Prostaglandin E synthase is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the PTGES gene. The protein encoded by this gene is a glutathione-dependent prostaglandin E synthase. The expression of this gene has been shown to be induced by proinflammatory cytokine interleukin 1 beta (IL1B). Its expression can also be induced by tumor suppressor protein TP53, and may be involved in TP53-induced apoptosis. Knockout studies in mice suggest that this gene may contribute to the pathogenesis of collagen-induced arthritis and mediate acute pain during inflammatory responses. It is inhibited by crisdesalazine (AAD-2004; GedaCure).
The structure of TEV protease has been solved by X-ray crystallography. It is composed of two β-barrels and a flexible C-terminal tail and displays structural homology to the chymotrypsin superfamily of proteases (PA clan, C4 family by MEROPS classification). Although homologous to cellular serine proteases (such as trypsin, elastase, thrombin etc.), TEV protease uses a cysteine as its catalytic nucleophile (as do many other viral proteases). Covalent catalysis is performed with an Asp-His-Cys triad, split between the two barrels (Asp on β1 and His and Cys on β2). The substrate is held as a β-sheet, forming an antiparallel interaction with the cleft between the barrels and a parallel interaction with the C-terminal tail. The enzyme therefore forms a binding tunnel around the substrate and side chain interactions control specificity.
=== Distribution === In June 2013, U.S. State Department released a report on slavery. It placed Russia, China, and Uzbekistan in the worst offenders category. Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, and Zimbabwe were at the lowest level. The list also included Algeria, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait among a total of 21 countries. In Kuwait, there are more than 600,000 migrant domestic workers who are vulnerable to forced labor and legally tied to their employers, who often illegally take their passports. In 2019, online slave markets on apps such as Instagram were uncovered. In the preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, thousands of Nepalese, the largest group of labourers, faced slavery in the form of denial of wages, confiscation of documents, and inability to leave the workplace. In 2016, the United Nations gave Qatar 12 months to end migrant worker slavery or face investigation. The Walk Free Foundation reported in 2018 that slavery in wealthy Western societies is much more prevalent than previously known, in particular the United States and Great Britain, which have 403,000 (one in 800) and 136,000 slaves respectively. Andrew Forrest, founder of the organization, said that "The United States is one of the most advanced countries in the world yet has more than 400,000 modern slaves working under forced labour conditions." An estimated 40.3 million are enslaved globally, with North Korea having the most slaves at 2.6 million (one in 10). Of the estimated 40.3 million people in contemporary slavery, 71% are women and 29% are men.
== Childhood == Save the Children's End of Childhood Report 2018 ranks the well-being of 175 nations' children on eight metrics related to health, education, labor, marriage, childbirth, and violence. Thailand ranked 85 of 175 nations (1=best; 175=worst). Other ASEAN nations ranked were: Singapore, 1; Malaysia, 67; Brunei, 68; Vietnam, 96; Philippines, 104; Indonesia, 105; Myanmar, 107; Cambodia, 119; and Laos, 132.

In maggot debridement therapy, sterile, medical-grade larvae of the necrophagous fly Lucilia sericata are used to eliminate necrotic (dead) tissue from non-healing skin and soft-tissue wounds. This is important as dead tissue can facilitate bacterial growth, impede wound healing, and reduce the effectiveness of topical medications. Physicians may administer the fly larvae directly to skin and soft tissue wounds or indirectly within a sealed mesh bag. Larvae then debride the wound by digesting, liquefying and consuming the dead tissue. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have cleared Lucilia sericata larvae for use as a "medical device" in the US to debride several types of wound including pressure ulcers, neuropathic foot ulcers, and nonhealing surgical wounds.
=== Seasonal variations === Different types of kimchi were traditionally made at different times of the year, based on when various vegetables were in season and also to take advantage of hot and cold seasons before the era of refrigeration. Although the advent of modern refrigeration – including kimchi refrigerators specifically designed with precise controls to keep different varieties of kimchi at optimal temperatures at various stages of fermentation – has made this seasonality unnecessary, Koreans continue to consume kimchi according to traditional seasonal preferences.
=== Tigrayan Opposition Parties === Opposition groups inside Tigray strongly rebuked the TPLF's actions. On May 11, Salsay Weyane Tigray (Sawet) issued an official statement rejecting the council's return, characterizing the assembly as a "theatrical performance" disconnected from legality and morality. The party accused the TPLF of treating the historical suffering of Tigrayans as a political tool to retain a three-decade monopoly on power. Sawet demanded an immediate halt to the political gamble and called for the creation of an all-inclusive Interim Transitional Government representing alternative civil and political stakeholders.
Cytisine, also known as baptitoxine, cytisinicline, or sophorine, is an alkaloid that occurs naturally in several plant genera, such as Laburnum and Cytisus of the family Fabaceae. It has been used medically to help with smoking cessation. It has been found effective in several randomized clinical trials, including in the United States and New Zealand, and is being investigated in additional trials in the United States and a non-inferiority trial in Australia in which it is being compared head-to-head with the smoking cessation aid varenicline (sold in the United States as Chantix). It has also been used entheogenically via mescalbeans by some Native American groups, historically in the Rio Grande Valley predating even peyote. Cytisine is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
Prior to trans fat regulation, hydrogenation is generally not performed fully, resulting in partially hydrogenated fat. The goal is to have some unsaturated bonds (C=C bonds) to remain to target a specific melting point and hardness. However, due to the isomerization side reaction, a significant fraction of this remaining unsaturated fat is turned into trans fat. This side reaction accounts for most of the trans fatty acids consumed in an industrialized society of the 1990s-2000s, by far. Regulation has led to some desire in tweaking for lower trans fat levels. The standard 140 kPa (20 psi) process of partial hydrogenation produces a product of about 40% trans fatty acid by weight, compared to about 17% using higher pressures of hydrogen. Blended with unhydrogenated liquid soybean oil, the high-pressure-processed oil produced margarine containing 5 to 6% trans fat. Based on 2005 U.S. labeling requirements (see below), the manufacturer could claim the product was free of trans fat. The level of trans fat may also be altered by modification of the temperature and the length of time during hydrogenation. Further regulation and consumer awareness has led to wider adoption of fully hydrogenated fats, which contain no trans fat due to an absence of double bonds. The "overshoot" in melting point and hardness could be combated by mixing in another fat, sometimes using interesterification to produce a more even blend. Plant oils rich in monounsaturated fats and saturated fats have also replaced some uses of hydrogenated fats.
