This is a working overview of immunomodulator, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.
This page was last updated on 2026-01-17 and is reviewed periodically as new material appears.
Overall evidence quality varies considerably. A large share of published reports come from single centers, rely on surrogate immunological markers, or lack adequate control groups. Systematic reviews have highlighted this heterogeneity as a barrier to pooling results. Open questions include which patients, if any, might benefit, what treatment duration is appropriate, and whether any effect is independent of standard care. The peptide is often described as an immune modulator rather than a therapy for one disease, which complicates confirmatory trial design.
Thymosin alpha 1 was identified in 1977 as a component of thymosin fraction 5, a heterogeneous preparation used in early studies of thymic function. Investigators purified the active material and determined its amino acid sequence, which enabled chemical synthesis. Work in the following decades concentrated on T-cell maturation and immune reconstitution in animals and small human cohorts. Early preparations varied in composition, so results from that period are difficult to compare with studies using defined synthetic peptide.
Identity and purity testing for thymosin alpha 1 relies mainly on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Chromatography separates the parent peptide from truncated or modified variants, while mass spectrometry confirms the expected molecular mass. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping provide additional sequence confirmation. Counterion content, water content, and residual solvents are measured separately as part of specification testing. No single method captures every attribute, so laboratories combine several techniques.
The peptide lacks cysteine, methionine, and tryptophan, so disulfide scrambling and sulfur oxidation are not major degradation routes. Instead, aspartate residues can undergo isomerization or cyclization to succinimide intermediates, generating isoaspartate variants. Hydrolysis of peptide bonds also occurs slowly in solution. These changes may reduce biological activity even when the main peak remains detectable. Stability studies therefore track both potency and the appearance of related substances.

The filtrate can be re-used by adding more dimethylurea and glyoxal (no additional catalyst is needed) and obtaining respectable yields, although this requires a longer reaction time. As of 2021, temgicoluril has not been evaluated outside of Latvia and Russia.
== Medical uses == Daunorubicin/cytarabine is indicated for the treatment of newly-diagnosed therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia (t-AML) or AML with myelodysplasia-related changes (AML-MRC) in people aged one year of age and older.
=== Late onset === In milder (or partial) urea cycle enzyme deficiencies, ammonia accumulation may be triggered by illness or stress at almost any time of life, resulting in multiple mild elevations of plasma ammonia concentration [Bourrier et al. 1988]. Patients with partial enzyme deficiencies may have a delay of symptoms for months or years. Indicators that you maybe suffering from OTC deficiency or a urea cycle disorder include "episodes of delirium, erratic behavior, or reduced consciousness, headaches, vomiting, aversion to foods high in protein, and seizures."
In the following years, it became the basis for the prosecutions of the opposition and the officers during the imposition of the totalitarian regime in the country. Between 23 and 31 January, Kimon Georgiev visited Moscow, where he met Joseph Stalin and Georgi Dimitrov for the first time. The main purpose of the visit was the conclusion, with Soviet mediation, of an alliance treaty between Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. Secret letters to the treaty envisaged the future creation of a federation, without specifying whether on an equal basis between the two countries, which Bulgaria insisted on, or by incorporating Bulgaria into Yugoslavia as a sixth republic, which was the Yugoslav position. The treaty was never concluded because of the opposition of the United Kingdom and the United States, who believed that Bulgaria could not act independently until a peace treaty was concluded. On 9 February 1945, Kimon Georgiev gave a report on the government's work to the First Congress of the Fatherland Front. Days after the first executions under the decision of the so-called People's Court, he deplored the "cases of self-destruction, arbitrariness and violence" that had been allowed to take place, claimed that they had been curbed quickly, and expressed satisfaction at their being channeled through the People's Court. He states that the constitution and "the rights and liberties of the Bulgarian people" have been restored, although the Council of Ministers rules by ordinance-laws and political organizations outside the Fatherland Front have not been legalized.

== Structure == There are about 1 million islets distributed throughout the pancreas of a healthy adult human. While islets vary in size, the average diameter is about 0.2 mm.:928 Each islet is separated from the surrounding pancreatic tissue by a thin, fibrous, connective tissue capsule which is continuous with the fibrous connective tissue that is interwoven throughout the rest of the pancreas.:928
In Kenya, the Ministry of Education controls all public universities. Students enroll after completing an 8–4–4 educational program system and attaining a mark of C+ or above. Students who meet the criteria set annually by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service receive government sponsorship, with the government providing part of their university or college fees. Students are also eligible for a low-interest loan from the Higher Education Loan Board; students must pay back the loan after completing their higher education.
== Protein-derived cofactors == In a number of enzymes, the moiety that acts as a cofactor is formed by post-translational modification of a part of the protein sequence. This often replaces the need for an external binding factor, such as a metal ion, for protein function. Potential modifications could be oxidation of aromatic residues, binding between residues, cleavage or ring-forming. These alterations are distinct from other post-translation protein modifications, such as phosphorylation, methylation, or glycosylation in that the amino acids typically acquire new functions. This increases the functionality of the protein; unmodified amino acids are typically limited to acid-base reactions, and the alteration of resides can give the protein electrophilic sites or the ability to stabilize free radicals. Examples of cofactor production include tryptophan tryptophylquinone (TTQ), derived from two tryptophan side chains, and 4-methylidene-imidazole-5-one (MIO), derived from an Ala-Ser-Gly motif. Characterization of protein-derived cofactors is conducted using X-ray crystallography and mass spectroscopy; structural data is necessary because sequencing does not readily identify the altered sites.
Formed solid unit doses of pharmaceuticals (capsules, suppositories, tablets, etc.) are commonly packed in blister packs. In Europe about 85% of solid unit doses are packed in blister packs with only about 20% in North America. Blister packs are pre-formed plastic/paper/foil packaging used for formed solid drugs. The primary component of a blister pack is a cavity or pocket made from a thermoformed plastic. This usually has a backing of paperboard or a lidding seal of aluminum foil or plastic film. Blister packs are useful for protecting drugs against external factors, such as humidity and contamination for extended periods of time. Blister packing machinery is readily available and is suited to validation processes.
Strong growth of demand: today, biopharmaceuticals account for about $55–$80 billion, or 15% of the total pharmaceutical market. They are growing by 15% per year, three times faster than LMW drugs, and are expected to pass the $150 billion per year threshold by 2015. Whereas just one out of the world's top ten drugs was a biopharmaceutical in 2001, the number went up to five in 2010 and is expected to increase further to eight by 2016 (see Table 2).

=== Calcium hydroxylapatite === Marketed as "Coaptite", this is spherical particles of calcium hydroxylapatite ceramic suspended in a sodium carboxylmethylcellulose, glycerine and water carrier gel. This is a synthetic version of a compound that is a normal component of bones and teeth. It is non-antigenic and noninflammatory. The particle size is in the range 75–125 μm and therefore should avoid migration away from the implant site. Once in place, the particles are enmeshed in a non-encapsulated stable soft collagen matrix. This matrix maintains volume even after the solid particles have been degraded and resorbed. The material is radio-opaque (and therefore will be visible on x-rays). It has been used in dental and orthopedic reconstructive surgery, and for replacement heart valves. In the field of plastic surgery, it is termed Radiance FNTM. As of 2022 only one publication exists. The material was used in submucosal injection site via transsphincteric route.
Fibrosis, also known as fibrotic scarring, is the development of fibrous connective tissue in response to an injury. Fibrosis can be a normal connective tissue deposition or excessive tissue deposition caused by a disease. Repeated injuries, chronic inflammation and repair are susceptible to fibrosis, where an accidental excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix components, particularly collagen, is produced by fibroblasts, leading to the formation of a permanent fibrotic scar. In response to injury, this is called scarring, and if fibrosis arises from a single cell line, this is called a fibroma. Physiologically, fibrosis acts to deposit connective tissue, which can interfere with or totally inhibit the normal architecture and function of the underlying organ or tissue. Fibrosis can be used to describe the pathological state of excess deposition of fibrous tissue, as well as the process of connective tissue deposition in healing. Defined by the pathological accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, fibrosis results in scarring and thickening of the affected tissue — it is in essence a natural wound healing response which interferes with normal organ function.
== Pathophysiology == Overproduction of collagen is thought to result from an autoimmune dysfunction, in which the immune system starts to attack the kinetochore of the chromosomes. This would lead to genetic malfunction of nearby genes. T cells accumulate in the skin; these are thought to secrete cytokines and other proteins that stimulate collagen deposition. Stimulation of the fibroblast, in particular, seems to be crucial to the disease process, and studies have converged on the potential factors that produce this effect.
=== Natural processes === There are over 30 collagens in nature that are similar in chemical composition but differ in terms of crystal structure. By far, collagen I and II are the most abundant. They initiatively form fibrils in vitro, while fibronectin, fibronectin-binding, collagen-binding integrins and collagen V are essential for collagen I forming and collagen XI for collagen II forming. Therefore, cellular mechanisms play key role in the protein self-assembly process.

Trials differ in patient population, dose schedule, background treatment, and the endpoints used to judge success. Many are small and single-center, so random variation can dominate the reported effects.
Authorization is limited to a small number of countries and covers specific indications such as chronic hepatitis B and vaccine adjuvant use. Availability and labelling differ by jurisdiction.
Most reviews describe it as an immunomodulatory agent with an uncertain clinical effect. They generally call for larger, better-controlled trials before firm conclusions are drawn.
The lyophilized powder is kept refrigerated at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and protected from light. Reconstituted solutions should be used promptly. Freezing and thawing repeatedly is avoided.
